This initiative needs your Input.

A Forum isn't really a Forum without...
Romans?

Basically, you can give as much or as little as you like. And take what you like from it.

I've tried to keep this short - but it needs reading before you decide on contributing!

So..
What does this Forum need? Contributions.

As a contributor - you become a Member. Which doesn't mean much - but the current Membership list is here

Contributions?

Prime basics are:

Open Source Graphics Code

Ooops
You can submit source material in one of two ways - either  as:

a) No conditions on its usage  - full and complete release. Only a request for credit where it's due
OR
b) Under a GNU General Public License (GPL) or Lesser GPL (LGPL). Information on this can be found at www.gnu.org. A copy of the  GPL license is here. The GNU licenses are not restrictive by nature - indeed - they are designed to preserve the free nature of the material.

Author credit is requested where material is used by third parties - please.

Submitted source code can be for any platform, software tool or language provided it is eligible under one of the above terms.

For preference - a 320x ~240 jpg thumbnail of the resultant image is requested with the source- as I may not be able to run the code myself - along with a "Used on" entry ("Nothing" is not only acceptable but desired) - and your own description (otherwise you get mine!). If I or my colleagues can't check the code's veracity against the thumbnail - it may be labelled as "Untested" or some such.

This is just protect the forum - I'd rather not do this - so help on how to check would be appreciated! Just so long as it's cheap!

Ship/Vehicle Views

Ooops A "View" is defined here as an image with a plain background or an image that is generated by source material provided on this site under the terms described above.

No conditions on the usage of Views will be accepted - full and complete release only. Author credit  where View material is used - is requested - as above.

Images should be preferably a minimum of 800 x ~600 pixels - preferably jpgs. Plain black backgrounds only (helps with smart selection tools). Interesting and useful angles please. Add some interesting comments as you feel fit

Even if you provide complete ship/vehicle source code as Open Source this can still be useful for people who use different tools or use none at all!

Montages

Ooops"Montage" imagery is defined as imagery where original artistic effort has been applied to create a work. This material is generally protected by copyright  (C) law. All Montage images on this site are the copyright of the authors.  This applies to any images created entirely through 3D scripts or programs where the source for that image is not provided under rules identified above.

However. Permission is granted for the publication of contributed Montage images on this site for use under the following condition.

Condition : Montage images are free to use as long as artist recognition is retained and there is no cropping or modifications other than resizing without consulting the artist . Artists may be contacted through this site.

Some "Main Site" images are, however, still copyright -  and are not  subject to the above permissions. These images will have a copyright notice where the image is used.

Pictures can be anything up to around 1280x1024 - 16million colours - again jpegs preferred (no GIFs please - this is ostensibly a GIF free site).

To avoid other people trying to claim ownership I suggest you fingerprint/watermark your submissions. Invisibly is preferred - obviously. To start with I am willing to watermark full size imagery under my Digimarc registry - but you'll have to trust me - it'll be tagged by my watermark - with my ID. I can only give you my word I won't steal your work! Otherwise - only submit reduced versions of the original - and keep those safe. If you have a more detailed original - you can probably prove you're the origin.

Ultimately - I think the VGAP community can withstand mole fraud of this kind.

Last, but most Certainly NOT least!

Tips, Advice and Tutorials

Ooops To be honest - I think this is the most important area for the long term value of this forum. Share the knowledge, reap the benefits. Please feel free to contribute useful material on the creation of "stuff". Any platform, tool, etc - anything. So long as it adds to the VGAP game. If you build full size, working fighters in your garage and just photograph them - fine! If you draw on an Etch-A-Sketch - ditto.
I've looked around - there are skills out there that need sharing.

Ooops(Who did this? It's brilliant!)
( Now answered!!! Kenneth Wisseman - of course! I should have known really!)

Paranoia Bit

If you're worried? So am I - a bit. This is why I suggest the use of GNU GPL/LGPLs. Pictures and bits of ships once free are probably safe from fraudulant use. But someone may try to claim it as theirs - but I doubt this scale of material is likely to be a target. Complete ship source code could be an issue but it is hoped that the VGAP community can self regulate this. I am working on the hope that once a 3rd Party Race gets included into the Game (goes "Gold") it has basically earned its "stripes" and should be relatively bullet-proof. But nothing is guarranteed in life!

Site Format and Submissions

Ooops For the final format of the ship/vehicle source, views and montage donations - I'd like this site to look uniformally neutral - no whopping great adverts for this race or the other! No machismo about how much one race is better than the another! And so on. The IMT Page is the basic template - for now. (my html skills might get better!)
Time and workload is the issue here - if you can supply a complete html page of all your submissions - in this format - or agreeable similar - it will go up really quickly - if I have to do it all - it goes on the queue.

If you're worried about not submitting very much - there will be a "Non-Aligned - Independent" page for occasional donors.
For the Tips, Advice and Tutorials pages- I intend to list these by Author and Tool Types. If you submit a complete html page (images and all) I will use it so long as it doesn't mess with the overall aspired neutrality of the site's image. If you bung me text - I'll bung it up in my current standard way. OK?
All contributors will get their page - if they want - I may have to resolve issues between Races and their Authors in some areas - but we'll see...

Fundamental Site ConditionsOoops

All submitted material for this site must be sourced from this site (and my freeserve "mysite" areas). I cannot deep link to contributors sites - unless they are on Freeserve servers. To be fair to all - I won't do this either - only my own areas. This means - you must provide me with all material - under the guidelines stated above. My ISP terms could be invalidated.

Similarly - I cannot allow deep linking to material on this site. This is not intended as a free storage area for other sites. If you discover sites using such links I will change the site accordingly to stop them as and when - if you let me know. If I discover the deep links from any supplier's site - I will delete the material.

Let's just not go down that road?

That's all for now? Thank you for reading this! Now where's that contribution???
